Subtalar Arthritis

  • Subtalar arthritis results in pain in the hindfoot (just below the ankle) with activity. It is aggravated with walking (especially on uneven ground)

  • It results in decreased eversion and inversion of the foot (side to side movement of the foot)

  • The most common cause of subtalar arthritis is previous injury including calcaneal and talus fracture

  • Dr. Marsh performs his subtalar fusion through a small open approach on the outside of the ankle fixed with 2-3 screws across the joint to promote union

  • When associated with ankle arthritis requiring fusion Dr. Marsh performs his fusion with a TTC fusion nail.

  • When associated with deformity correction or adjacent hindfoot arthritis Dr. Marsh performs a double (talonavicular and subtalar) fusion or a triple (talonavicular, calcaneocuboid and subtalar) fusion
