Midfoot Arthritis (Lisfranc fusion)

  • Degenerative condition of 1st metatarso-phalangeal (MTP) joint

  • Characterized by painful and stiff 1st toe

  • Dr. Marsh does a variety of procedures for 1st MTP arthritis including cheilectomy (debridement), Cartiva® arthroplasty and fusion (gold standard)

o   Chielectomy is a debridement of the dorsal osteophyte (bone spur) to decrease extension related pain and improve range of motion of the toe

o   Cartiva® arthroplasty is an open procedure that implants a polyvinyl implant into the metatarsal head to increase joint space, decrease pain and preserve range of motion

o   Fusion is an open procedure which eliminated 1st MTP motion through a combination of screws and plate. It decreases pain but eliminated motion. 1st MTP fusion is the gold standard for 1st MTP arthritic pain
