Ankle Arthritis

  • The symptoms of ankle arthritis include pain, stiffness, swelling and loss of motion

  • The most common cause of end-stage ankle arthritis is post-traumatic causes. Other causes include inflammatory arthropathies, chronic ankle instability, malalignment (deformity), infection and hemophilia.

  • Depending on a patients age and activity level Dr. Marsh may offer an ankle fusion or replacement

  • Ankle fusions are either performed arthroscopically or open depending on a patients soft tissues and level of deformity.  A more traditional operation which reduces pain but eliminates motion is more ideal for younger more active patients

  • Ankle Arthroplasty (replacement) preserves ankle motion by replacing the surface of both tibia and talus with metal implants with a polyethylene (plastic) spacer between the implants. Ankle replacements have similar outcomes for pain relief and reoperation rates as ankle fusion but maintain ankle motion allowing for a more normal gait (walking pattern)
